A Brazilian Holiday

No, The Husband and I aren’t headed to Brazil, but me and all of you are taking a little trip down south (way down south) to Rio via American expat Rachel from Rachel’s Rantings in Rio de Janeiro. Since Brazil’s summer is in full swing, I thought it would be nice for all of us Northern Hemisphere people who are currently suffering from the post-holiday blues to live vicariously through Rachel and head out to the beach (ignoring recent riots and floods of course) with her tips on how to bathe like a Brazilian. Go ahead and grab your itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dots and let’s let Rachel take us away…
………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Summer is quickly approaching in Rio de Janeiro and that can sometimes be intimidating for foreigners.  Bathing suits, for both men and women alike, are enough to make you run to your hotel/hostel pool and stay there with the other white folk.

Don’t be scared! The beaches here are not just for the excessively toned and tanned!  Put on that Brazilian bikini, aka. post-its on string, and get your ass out there. You are not alone.

Every Brazilian body type, and there are many, sport the barely there suits on a beach.  Hell, even Great Aunt Julia, all 200 + pounds, is wearing a smaller suit than you.

Every time I suit up for the beach, I go in front of the mirror to pinch and groan. Oh how the glory days have passed.  Of course I suck it up and head out with the family.  Upon arrival, I look around.  Sure, there are the hot bodies and the not bodies, and everything in between.  It’s enough to make this stomach obsessed girl from California finally breath.

The beach in Brazil isn’t really about how hot you look, not once you pass 25 anyway.  It’s about being there, enjoying it, and burning off the drama from the workweek.

In the words of the Caricoa: “There’s nothing a good day at the beach can’t cure.”

Amen! And don’t forget your sunscreen!

  1. It's true! But obsess we do.Kinda like how we are always hearing that bigger women shouldn't wear horizontal stripes or shorter skirts. Is wearing only black and skirts down to the knee going to really hide the fact that you're larger? Hail no.The sun is for everyone! I love this outlook and thanks!

  2. Great post. I don't think I'd ever have the nerve to hit the beach in Brazil, well maybe in a striped Victorian bathing suit down to my knees – that would work.

  5. Hahahaha! Mais que beleza de post! Parabens garota! (What a beauty of a post! Congrats Girl!)I spent all my childhood and teenagehood holidays in Brasil and I totally agree with you on one point. When you get to the beach and see some sculptural bodies around… just smile, carry your imperfections with dignity and don't lose faith… sometimes just by being the odd pale foreigner can attract an interesting carioca surfer. And you end up singing Brazil…la la la larararaaaaa! 🙂 XoXo

  6. Oh to live in Brazil then. I doubt I would wear a bikini 'now' – but looking back (when things did not sag, stomach did not wabble – and definately less dimply bits) I wish I wore one 'then'.I guess I'm saying is that I agree – as hell, things are only gunna get worse – so slap on the sunscreen, slip on a hat and squeeze into a teeny weeny strip of fabric and stand proud (-:Oh, and silly old me only just read the 'there is no guillotine in le petit village – put your little head here' comment above your followers box. Too too funny (_-:

  7. Everyone obsesses, even the most self-confident women. I do it, and I consider myself to be in great shape. We all have our off days. It's nice that women of all shapes and sizes can go to that beach and be confident, though. 🙂 There needs to be more places like that. http://glamkittenslitterbox.blogspot.com/

  18. Ugh, that I could go to the beach and tan like you normal people! As it is, my white arse is forced to enjoy breathtaking shores via pictures and my co-worker's stories of their vacations to Cozumel, etc. etc. But you are too right about the whole “I look ridiculous in a bikini, why do I even bother?” bit. By the time you get out there, it's like the gym — everyone's too worried about their own bodies to give a fig about yours.Great post, Sara. 🙂

  20. I LOVE your blog! I can relate to so much of the content and I can only hope I'm still blogging away in a years time like you are after being well and truly settled in your new life in Provence, with lots of interesting things to say…I'm not too worried though- the life of an expat, who doesn't speak the native language and knows only a handful of people should leave me with plenty to say!! All the best, Emilie
