Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

I messed up.

About a month ago, when I planned on meeting Auntie Ilene and her friends (Les Bargettes as they’re known) in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, I was sure that I would be there for the whole Gypsy ode to St. Sara because after all, seeing St. Sara worshipped and paraded about has always seemed like a destiny of mine (I told you all about it in this post).

But what I didn’t pay attention to, was that the whole procession thing occurs on the Friday, not the entire weekend, and since on Friday The Husband and I were catching up on sleep and laundry (I’ll give you one guess on which one of us caught up on what), we planned on meeting them on Saturday and well by Saturday, all of the fun and games were just about over. Luckily however, having lunch with Les Bargettes is still reason enough to visit Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Sidenote – Auntie Ilene is not in fact my Aunt. She is my friend’s Aunt but I have adopted her (and posted about said adoption here). Les Bargettes are a group of friends from Texas who go on holiday every year to a different area of France and after a few days of traveling about, set sail on a barge down one of the rivers. Hence the name Les Bargettes. And P.S. I kind of want to be a Bargette.

We had raw oysters, cooked oysters, and the cutest darn waiter there ever was.

Since it wouldn’t be fair that just because I messed up and missed the whole St. Sara Gypsy thing, you guys all had to miss out, Auntie Ilene was kind enough to share her photos of the festivities…

I decided that that colorful lady up there is named Esmerelda. It could be something like Jane for all I know, but to me, she screams ‘Esmerelda’.

And because Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is in the Camargue, Auntie Ilene through this picture of flamingos in for good measure….

And I couldn’t help but snap some of the wild horses hanging out alongside the road on the way home. They aren’t Gypsies, but they’ll do.

Bisou!

  1. I'm sorry you missed the main festivities in Les Saintes Maries de la Mer but happy you got there for lunch with Les Bargettes. The platter of oysters would have been enough to get me there. Have a great Sunday.

  2. I never got to St Marie – and I was really disappointed. I wanted to see it because it is supposedly where Mary Magdelene lived as a hermit and then died after all the hoo-ha with Jesus. Those oysters are the second reason. They are enormous! And the photo with the rosé, well that's just cruel you know. Missing May in France with rosé soooooo much. Enjoy!

  3. Oops, sorry, Mary first arrived in France at St-Maries-de-la-mer when she fled the Holy Land, but she hermitted* and died at La Sainte-Baume. My apologies. I still wish I'd visited. *I made up a new word.

  8. Wow, looks like so much fun. I don't think I've actually seen pink flamingos in real life! xo

  9. Sara, you made me smile. That name, “les Bargettes,” could easily be misinterpreted by a French person. As you probably know, “un barge,” in French slang, is someone who is crazy… So, I don't know, maybe you should think twice before sending in your application to become “a Bargette…” 🙂 Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  10. It's an easy mistake to imagine that festivities will fall on weekends. However, as St Marie and St Sara are official “Saints Days” the dates never change. You could try for another festival in the coming months. Festival of the Horse is one that I plan to see one day.

  11. Have never seen such large oysters. My sister, in a famous Paris restaurant, asked for cocktail sauce for her oysters and the waiter said, “Madame, in France we do not eat oysters with cocktail sauce.” I have heard the Camargue horses are born black. Must be a beautiful part of France.

  13. Esmeralda is a very suitable name! The Camargue is an area of France that I haven't yet visited but one that I would love – flamingos are so elegant!

  16. I'm so sorry you missed the main event! At least you still got a fantastic lunch. Les Bargettes sound like a lot of fun! I'd want to be one of them, too! What could be more fun than meeting up and vacationing with old friends once a year in France?

  17. I love oysters!!!I remember Saintes Maries, I love Camargue. There's an incredible location, you have to go for a dinner, a romantic dinner, with your husband. The name is Mas de Peint in Le Sambuc. You can sleep but you can only have a dinner. Incredible and so romantic. During summer with candles and flattering curtains and rosé wine …Bisous, Babi

  18. Whoops! Guess that means you'll just have to schedule another visit to see your fest, eat more oysters, and see the horses. Sounds rough. 🙂
