Sad Wallowing Day

Happy Thanksgiving tout le monde!

You see, I can still say Happy Thanksgiving because for me it hasn’t happened yet. At my house it will be happening tomorrow, which means that yesterday, while my American brethren were stuffing themselves silly with turkey and pumpkin goodness, it was just a plain old boring Thursday for me, except it really wasn’t. It wasn’t because Thanksgiving Thursday is my least favorite day of the year, it makes me sad and homesick. So instead of going about my usual routine, I now take to wallowing.

My wallowing basically means that I exclaim I’m taking the day ‘off’ and I do whatever strikes my fancy, with a healthy dash of laziness. This year’s Sad Wallowing Day, kicked off at 6AM when I woke. Tea was made and I took to the couch, flipped open the laptop and treated myself to a viewing of last year’s Thanksgiving Day parade on youtube (fast forwarding through the boring bits).

I did some laundry and ironed. I’m one of those weird people who likes to iron, I find it relaxing, plus, I can catch up on some TV while being productive. This ironing session consisted of The Vampire Diaries and Elementary (I find Jonny Lee Miller adorable).

My Sad Wallowing Day got a bit cheerier when I received a Happy Thanksgiving tweet from a rugby player that I fed last Thanksgiving. But this isn’t just any rugby player, this is a rugby player that if he had been drawn by Disney, would have been Prince Charming. Seriously, even Gregory thinks he charming (actually, Gregory said, and I quote; “he is so charming I want to punch him“). So yeah, Prince Charming tweeted me and I got heart palpitations, swooned and immediately called Mrs. London so we could giggle about his charming perfection.

I decided on the very un-Thanksgiving like lunch of frozen pizza. I was hungry and even making a sandwich can seem like a pain in the tookus on Sad Wallowing Day so frozen pizza it was… in the interest of full disclosure; I had a beer too. Pizza is one of those things that I really like beer with.

I watched Giant, my favorite Thanksgiving movie ever. Not that Giant is a Thanksgiving movie, it’s when I watch it for some reason but there is that one adorable Thanksgiving scene so I guess it can kind of be considered a Thanksgiving movie.

And then Gregory came home early which was nice because not only was it Sad Wallowing Thanksgiving, it was also the fifth anniversary of the day we met. That’s right, five years ago yesterday, this happened.

So that was that but now I’ve got to get my skates on… since tomorrow is Thanksgiving at chez moi, my trusty sidekick Mrs.London is on her way up from Toulon (with Fifty’s trusty sidekick, Napoleon) to give me a hand. We have lots to do before Honey Jr and Honey’s Honey arrive with their hungry bellies tomorrow afternoon for my very own Le Petit Village Francegiving.

Bisous!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving on Friday. Sorry you had to have a Sad Wallowing Day and miss out on Thursday Thanksgiving. Here in California (we don't spend Thanksgiving in France), we hosted 25 people at our table including 6 French for their very first Thanksgiving feast and snooze fest.

  2. When I was a little kid, my grandma gave me a pet rooster. Or so I thought. I think my parents expected we would fatten and eat him, but Roosty was my pet and I had a dark view of that. They told me Roosty had to be returned to grandma because he was too big to live at our little house, but when I couldn't find him in her chicken pen, I never ate chicken at her house again. We also had a neighbor who was an evil man because he'd swing his chickens around until he broke their heads off and chopped the heads off his bunnies. I'm still pretty freaked out at the thought. If I had to kill my own meat, I'd be a vegetarian. So I laughed hilariously at the Giant Thanksgiving scene while sympathizing with the kids completely.

  4. Even on sad wallowing day, you get up at 6 am? You really must be a morning person! I wish I were; I have adjusted to my 6 am wakeup call, but I'm not happy about it.

  5. You deserve a sad, wallowing day! {It actually sounds like a pretty good day minus the ironing.} I was unexpectedly more homesick yesterday than I imagined I would be. Knowing I'll be seeing friends and family in a month helps, though. So anyway, HAPPY THANKSGIVING, MY FRIEND! :o)

  6. I don't know if it would help, but you know you could have watched the parade live on ustvnow.com? You can sign up for the basic channels for free. They'll try to encourage you to buy an expensive package to get better quality streaming, but it' clear you don't have to. I enjoyed watching the parade while cooking. This time of year is always hard for me no matter what! I think you're taking the right attitude about i! Allow yourself a wallow day and then I think we can move on easier. Except, now I have to get through Christmas!! 😉 Probably more wallowing ahead for me! Enjoy your upcoming Thanksgiving feast!!

  7. I just need to add that although it might have been Sad Wallowing Day, you still made the effort to comfort a certain fellow wallower and that says much about who you are, methinks! Happy Cooking!

  12. Awwww. I was so homesick yesterday! As everyone was going about their business as usual, I wanted to scream, “Don't you people know we're supposed to be brining a turkey and baking pumpkin pies right now?!” We're having our Thanksgiving tomorrow. Fakesgiving, we're calling it because it's just not the same over here…

  14. Francegiving – I like that! I made my third Thanksgiving meal in France last night. We had duck to save time as it was a school night and Picard pumpkin puree made the pie turn out great again. It was unorthodox but perfect for our mix of Brits and Americans in Paris! Hope your celebration this weekend is just as good.

  15. This post made me giggle, not at all because I found your sad, wallowey state humorous but because I so related. Except that I like washing dishes not ironing. Weird, huh? I love Vampire Diaries – have you watched the Originals yet? They are my favourite characters from Vampire Diaries so I'm really enjoying it.

  17. At first, I would ahve thought wallowing day sounded terrible, but then I realize it actually sounds like my every day which can be sort of awesome. But missing Thanksgiving really is one of the hardest days to be away. I hope your Thanksgiving the following day made up for it!

  19. “Sad Wallowing Day” is the perfect term for it… I felt the exact same way on Thursday. Being an expat on Thanksgiving is especially rough. I couldn't even look at Facebook or Instagram without feeling extreme pangs of jealousy over my friends' delicious turkey dinners!
