je voudrais une machine de temps

After a two month hiatus, I have resumed my French lessons with the fantastic Professeur. With the French lessons back in my life (which is funny, because my life is like one long, rambling, never ending French lesson) I’ve found myself quite interested in finding out who it is that invented the French language. Like who was the person who actually sat down and made all this stuff up? Because I really want to hop in a time machine, travel back in time, hunt them down, and hit them over the head with a shovel.

That’s pretty much it.
A time machine and a shovel,
that’s all I need.

  1. In an ironic twist, this happens to be all I'm learning about in a class called “History of English.” The history of English is really the history of Nordic and romance languages. 😦

  3. Good luck with the French lessons! I have never tried learning but it sounds ridiculously hard. They talk so fast as well!

  4. Nice use of the conditional! 🙂 And of course it couldn't just be called “a time machine” in French, it has to have several different names depending on what you want to do with it! -une machine à remonter le temps-une machine à explorer le temps-une machine à voyager dans le temps

  5. i said the exact same thing about german once!! but not that i'd go hit him with a shovel, just have a convo about how there doesn't need to be fem, mas, and neutral articles in front of every single noun. so annoying.

  15. I've been tossing around the idea of resuming my French lessons. But I fear I will NEVER learn to speak even basic French and I will simply waste money and time. It really is such a challenging language.

  16. I smell what you're steppin' in sister. I'm sure when you find the “who” they will be partying with the Italians having a contest to see who can come up with the most 'exceptions' to grammar rules – and they are all drunk and fighting over whose wine is better. It's all connected, you see. xo

  18. If you REALLY want to know where the French language came from, at least in terms of its more recent political background, read THE DISCOVERY OF FRANCE by Graham Robb – NYT book review here:http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/04/books/review/Weber-t.htmlAs an American who is about to move to France and who needs to relearn French after many years, the book made me feel less intimidated about everything to do with French culture and language.I am so enjoying your blog. You make me laugh out loud. More pictures of Fifty would not go amiss :)Cheers,Katherine

  20. Good luck with the continued French Lessons. I started learning in High School, and did well enough (B's) to get into Intermediate French in College. Big Mistake. Everything was conducted in French, not in French and English. I Got a D, barely avoiding a Fail. Now I stick to CD Lessons, especially when I want to go to Quebec.

  28. I'm with Pearl…I found this purse at the bottom on the Spanish steps in Italy about a decade back, at the Furla store (when Italy was still on the lira and the purse was still cheap) and I've been thinking about that dang thing for a decade…So, I'm just sayin' if you figure it out I could totally go back and get that purse. Oh, and there are a few teeeeensy mistakes with some boys after a few too many drinks that I would like to ahem tell myself not to make. Hmmm…Now that I'm thinking about it, this time machine could seriously work to my advantage.
