where it's at

my house courtesy of: you had me at bonjour

++ OMG I have a dishwasher! A dishwasher! Do you have any idea how long it’s been since I’ve had a dishwasher?! Since I lived in Dublin and roomed with my cousin Bibbie in Chapelizod like four years ago. Four years is a long time to go with dishpan hands.

++ There are actual cabinets in the kitchen. I’m sure loads of you, are thinking, “so what, cabinets in kitchens are completely normal”, well I’m here to tell you, not necessarily in Europe they aren’t.

++ But while I have loads of kitchen cabinets (nine and four drawers to be exact) there is not a single closet in this house, not a one, not even in the bedroom. Ikea here I come.

++ Whereas the house in the original LPV had loads and loads of mint growing in the back garden, my new house has strawberry bushes. And as soon as I tame the jungle that is the garden (correction; as soon as The Husband tames the jungle), I’m going to walk back there and pick me some.

++ Brother-in-Law switched the refrigerator doors around so it opens on the right side, but naturally I keep trying to pry it open from the left. D’oh!

++ Fifty is not adjusting all too well yet. The church bells toll every hour (please note the proximity of those bells to my house in the photo above) and they drive him crazy. The normal ones are OK, but for the extra special ringings at noon and 7p.m., Fifty uses his extra special barking. Between the both, I’m expecting early onset deafness.

++ The other day I treated myself to a break from the unpacking with a glass of Rosé in the sun at the little place around the corner (74 steps door to door… I counted) and not only did they actually have Rosé, but they actually serve food too.

Take that Le Petit Bar.

  1. Lovely house Sarah. I must confess the first thing I noticed was the church tower 🙂 On the bright side, you can get rid of all your watches. You will ALWAYS know what time it is from now on 🙂 Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  3. Your house looks great. I will never take kitchen cabinets and closets for granted again. We don't have a single closet in our house, not a one. It drives me batty! 😉

  4. It looks beautiful! I want to sit in the spring sunshine with you and some rose and watch the husband clear your garden (does that sound a bit pervy? Good!)We need a skype date quick-sticks so you can show me all around the new abode. Poor Fifty. And sucks to your ass-mar Petit Bar.

  5. I feel your pain with the non-existent closets. Felt like we spent most of this year putting together Ikea ones and I still don't have all my stuff put away – could be more to do with me than the closets at this point maybe? I grew up that close to church bells too, you'll get used to it and love it one day.

  6. Is that the side of your house? What a beautiful stone wall! Our house has three really big closets and I am forever thankful for this rarity. One of these days I need to get out of my lpv and come drink a rosé in your lpv 🙂

  7. The house sits at an odd angle so that's actually the front of my house and my front terrace, but the 'back' garden is around on the side because the back of my house is attached to the side of another house (told you it was weird).

  10. Yay for the dishwasher!! My Mom's kitchen is small and she has never had a dishwasher. It takes forever to wash and dry all her dishes after company. I think the church bells are kind of cool. I bet after a bit you won't even notice them. Although Fifty will. xo

  11. In Germany when our local church got its bell repaired after 50 years of Communism, it was exactly one week before the neighbors got up a petition to ring it only for services. Thanks, neighbors! And if I know strawberries, you'd better go out and grab some before either the critters or the rain gets 'em.

  12. I laughed so hard at the part about fifty! And I know what you mean about cabinets! Like, even the newer houses don't have them and it confuses me! And no closets either over here…it's crazy!

  13. How lovely is your new place! And super exciting about the cabinets and dishwasher! I'd say some earplugs may be in order between the bells and Fifty! xo

I can't believe you have lived so long without a dishwasher! Poor Fifty! I hope for your sake and his that he adjusts to the bells. Do they make doggy earplugs?

  22. Real cupboards. I'm so jealous. I do have a dishwasher but I just use it as a drying rack after I wash them by hand. Every 6 months I run it whether it needs it or not. But I am one. You are 2+50! It looks lovely Sara, just lovely!

  23. Oh, I totally understand the closet thing. But, what makes me laugh is the term “dressing”? Seriously? That little closet space is what you call a “dressing”? I'm supposed to be impressed with this broom closet? The French truly are crazy!

  27. Win, win, win. Just get some earplugs. 🙂 You'll get used to it. I can see/hear three churches from my house so I get the 15-minute bells, the hour bells, and extra special Sunday/holiday bells in stereo from three directions. But I always know what time it is!

  32. Yay!!!! I should totally bring Dacia because she has an epic (and by epic, I mean obnoxious…) bark that would blend well with Fifty's. Can't wait to see le noveau LPV!!

  33. Buggar about the barking but I think the bar with rosé AND food makes up for it. At least Fifty can be trained – same can't be said for the old bar owner. You made the right choice!

  34. I like your house in the new LPV. You are about as close to the church and the ringing bells as we are in Sablet. I actually love the bells, they keep me grounded about time of the day. Our bells ring at 7:00 AM for the first time and then stop at 10:00 PM.

  40. Sounds absolutely perfect – apart from bell-barking induced deafness, of course. I recently bought an IKEA wardrobe for my daughter, this one http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70141855/ to be precise. It's a tad more expensive than your usual IKEA stuff, but rock solid and really good quality. PS: Thanks for the sweetest comment ever 🙂 xx

  41. Congrats on your new house! You sound super excited about it and even if Fifty doesn't like the bells too much now, he will hopefully get use to them. If not, your neighbors will have to get use to him! You get bonus point in my book for the dishwasher and cabinets 🙂 Good deal, that's what I say!Ashley

  43. Why is the theme song from “The Jeffersons” playing in my head right now? Love that your new beautiful home has amenities that many of us would never guess that being without is the norm in Europe. Totally feeling you on the cabinets – my first English cottage (and the 2nd, come to think of it) had none – my dishes were kept on a narrow shelf as if on display. Now – because I'm in the process of moving myself (which I have yet to blog about) I share this with you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYcqToQzzGY&feature=fvwrel xo
