à la rentrée

{going home}

La rentrée: the return of students to school, workers to the office, and tourists back to their homes after the summer holidays, signalling the beginning of Fall.

Well it’s official, I’ve lost that summer feeling. Today is September 1st and with that nasty heat wave finally broken (I wore jeans yesterday… gasp!), Autumn is definitely closing in on us. (Autumn sounds so much nicer than fall, don’t you think? Yes, I think so too.)

Honestly, I’m a little down in the dumps about the whole summer being over thing. It was too fast this year (I know we say that every year but really, it was too too fast, like warp speed fast) and I’m sad to see it go.

To cheer me up, I’ve been trying to focus on some of the positive things about my Autumn, and I thought I’d share them with you. Because really, if I can’t share them with you, then who am I going to share them with…

++ The return of television. I’ve been waiting for new episodes of Revenge, Boardwalk Empire, and Sons of Anarchy (why hello there Jax Teller) all summer long. In fact, I’m pretty sure that if we didn’t have new programming to entertain us each fall, those months would be unbearable, so thank you Hollywood for looking after our mental well being.

++ Not only am I excited about fictional characters on my TV, but two of my very own blogging buddies will be making their television debuts on House Hunters International! First up, Aidan and her brood will grace your American screens on Thursday the 13th of September (set your DVRs people!). And this very weekend, darling New Yorker, Ella Coquine, is filming her segment in Paris. I’m practically bursting at the seams over this. Bursting!

++ W A R D R O B E  C H A N G E ! Unpacking my Autumn clothes always feels like I’ve gone shopping. I’m looking forward to wearing cardigans, opaque tights, and boots again. I’ve become bored with my sundresses and shorts (although, next week the temperature is supposed to be back up to 29°C/ 85°F so the summer wardrobe is not being retired quite yet).

++ The return of rugby. Enough said.

++ Being able to go on walks with Fifty without coming across unleashed tourists dogs (a big ol’ pet peeve of mine). I don’t care if you ‘think’ you have the sweetest dog in the world… you never can predict how two dogs will react when they come across each other, so please leash your dog, or at the very least be ready to if needed.
This PSA was brought to you by Sara in Le Petit Village and Fifty

++ My mother and her friends arriving in two weeks is definitely something to look forward. Not only are they bringing all of my American goodies (Kraft Mac & Cheese yo!) but since they’re on holiday, I’m on holiday too… Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Gordes, Roussillon, Cassis, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence,  Les Baux-de-Provence, and Marseille… my very own staycation.

So tell me,
what are some of your
positive Autumn things?

  2. Oh yes, autumn rocks the TV series, and it always seems to bring a calm after crazy summers, although looks like you have a fan time planned with your mum and her friends!

  3. I am sooo excited for you about your Mom and friends coming over! Really, I understand. 🙂 And I thought of you as I put on socks this morning (socks!) and yoga pants–not baggy linen shorts–hoooooray! Since I actually am one of those leashless dog owners (in my town, not elsewhere) my big pet peeve is tourists letting their young kids walk their dogs! Grrr…And finally, yes, wardrobe change!!! Especially as you said the magic word: boots.xo,H

  5. Definitely agree…Summer went by too fast. But I like all seasons – just wish they were more evenly split…no just barely 2 months of summer! Enjoy your mom's visit…and the beginning of Autumn. I'm looking forward to the kid's Rentree and a little traveling myself..back to Paris in Sept…and down to Montpellier in Oct…

  11. I'm the opposite! I'm sooooooo excited fall is here. I'm usually so sad that summer is over, but it's been so brutally hot that I'm elated for some cooler weather.

  15. It's over 100F where I am, so I can't quite think of fall yet. But if forced to (thanks!) I'm looking forward to my October 1 memoir publication date! Other than that though, I'd gladly stay in summer. And your stay-cation sounds wonderful.

  17. Because we live in Mexico, we completely miss out on autumn and winter. The winter I can do without, but I do miss the change of colors in autumn.

  18. Ugh. I hate people who don't leash their dogs. So annoying.

  19. I don't know why people don't leash their dogs here. I've seen a few dogs cause car accidents from running in the road, one that was run over, and I've been almost attacked a few times while running. Seriously people. Your dog needs a leash!Their attitude towards cats is just as bizarre to me.You think it's cold in the South? I'm wearing three layers in the northwest!I like your view on unpacking the autumn clothes being like a shopping spree.

Oh, and I will be watching for Aidan on the TV!Bises,Genie

  22. Ohhh I am antsy for Autumn!! But being back in LA after three years of New England Autumn is making me a wee bit sad…what will I do without the fun flitting of leaves in the air and the brisk air on my face? But I am dying for boots weather again. I'm over the sandals. And I'm just aching for layering clothing again. Can. Not. Wait.Do you have a regular job in Provence? I've never asked and I've never read anything mentioning one. You saying you are on vacay made me think of that question.

  23. Oh my gosh, two more House Hunters International people? They must have done a major sweep of the blogoverse or something… but that's so exciting! I wrapped the main part of my episode here in Nuremberg last weekend and it was such a trip… can't wait to see how it all turns out!
