woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head

// Since we don’t have any plans for Halloween this year (Brother-in-Law is hosting a party again but is throwing it on November 1st and we already have plans for the 1st) other than watching the old cartoon version the Legend of Sleepy Hollow (it used to scare the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid), I’ve thrown myself headfirst into Thanksgiving plans. Last year was the warm up and this year is the real deal. I’m ready, but since I could always use some inspiration… what is your favorite Thanksgiving dish or tradition? Inquiring minds and all.

// Speaking of Sleepy Hollow… have you been watching the new TV show? It’s bizarre but quirky and we’re loving it. I grew up only a hop, skip and a jump from Sleepy Hollow so for me it’s pure nostalgia, while Gregory is loving the fact that when I was a little girl, it was the headless horseman that fueled my nightmares.

// I’ve made a new rule for myself (sometimes I make up rules that I have to abide by because I’m a weirdo)… I’m only writing in cursive. I discovered that my cursive penmanship has gone right down the toilet and considering how much I prided myself on my cursive skills back in elementary school, my chicken scrawl was simply not acceptable. Back when I was in school (you know, when I walked there, in the snow, uphills, both ways), penmanship was a big deal. Is it still a big deal? I think it should be, so now I’m in self-imposed cursive camp.

// Last night we had a couple of drinks with Mr. & Mrs. Honey. It’s been ages since we’ve seen them. And are you ready to hear something amazing… after four years here, I could actually understand Mr. Honey! OK, not everything he uttered in that super thick south of France accent of his, but like 75% and that’s progress let me tell you. (Remember that time that I thought he was telling me that sheep brushed their teeth with mushrooms?)

// We’re in the middle of another wonderful weekend of doing nothing much. After months of going pretty much non-stop; Dublin, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Paris, Devon, London, Lyon, and multiple trips to Toulon, quiet weekends at home are much wanted and much needed. Basically I’m saying I’m old and homegirl needs a break.

// Since it’s Sunday, I have to run and get my lunch on… we’ve got roast pork, garlic mashed potatoes, choux de Bruxelles (that’s brussel sprouts en français but saying it in French makes me feel all kinds of fancy) and chocolate flan on the menu today. And of course cheese, lots and lots of cheese. What’s new with you?

Bisous!

  2. Mmm. Your lunch sounds amazing! I'm currently trapped in the bedroom while our pipes are being repaired so I'm envious of your cooking abilities!

  3. Quiet here too. I made a batch of chili for lunch and Remi is cooking duck tonight. Is it a wonder that I have gained weight?? I have been craving mashed potatoes…would that be too heavy to eat with the duck? Hmmm….

  4. Lovin' your title to this post! Now that song'll be in my head all day!We just watched the first episode of Sleepy Hollow last week. I like it! Not sure if it'll become one of our regulars or not, but the actor who plays Ichabod (sp?) is a hottie!

  5. It's been a quiet weekend I suppose for us all. I am, however heading over for mimosas at Paris Cheapskate's (do you know her?) in an hour, so that'll change pretty soon. : )My cursive writing has gone sour as well. I blame the computer. I wrote something down in front of Aurel's mom and she made a comment on how penmanship must not really be taught in America. That made me sad because like you, my cursive was beautiful. I went to Catholic school, of COURSE penmanship was taught!Happy Sunday!

  6. I've kept meaning to watch that Sleepy Hollow program, but I appear to have had a mental block on when it is actually on! I'm hoping that it's on catchup somewhere, and I can remember to record the rest…As for the writing, well, let me put it this way, my teachers rejoiced when computers in school meant I could type my work, and I was actually forced to use the computer for my GCSE coursework, so that might tell you something about my penmanship (in my defence, I am dyslexic!)Finally, I love that Brussels sprouts are 'cabbages from Brussels' in French, my great grandad always used to call them 'them wee cabbages' :o)

  7. We've just spent a leisurely Sunday lunch with friends, sharing courgette soup, raclette and plum crumble. I've had a glass too many of white wine and my head is nodding (despite 1à hours of sleep last night!!) I HATE brussels sprouts (whatever they are called!)

  12. from what I've heard (my Spanish teacher ranted about this in regards to her own children last fall), cursive handwriting is falling by the wayside; as in, they're only learning to sign their names. shameful!also, I've already watched that Sleepy Hollow cartoon, like, 3 times…this month. the Ichabod Crane song got stuck in my head for a while, so I indulged.

  13. I think I just heard (don't quote me) that cursive is no longer part of the curriculum. Sad, I agree.

  14. My students love to use cursive, which is great until I can't read it because they haven't mastered it! But then, they got rid of slates, which I think was an error of epic proportions…I don't really do Halloween, or Thanksgiving (I mean, what have Brits got to be thankful for in that whole story, with the wasted tea and all), but you can never go wrong with a good batch of roasted potatoes, can you?

  18. Hope you had a restful weekend…dinner sounds yum! An Irish friend who also lives here has gone to visit there and is bringing us back a turkey…fresh! As we can't seem to find one here in time for Thanksgiving. For me, it's the stuffing and butternut squash that make the T-day meal. Oo, also the chocolate cream pie….but that's another story.
