We're Driving Cadillacs In Our Dreams

// Gregory has a developed a full on obsession with Cadillacs. Not the shiny new ones, and definitely not those SUVs, but old Cadillacs. Like anything older than about ten years and he’s oohing and aahing all over it and demanding to know the cost, as if my brain is stored with Cadillac’s blue book data.

// I’ve been forgetting about my laundry. In the ten years that I lived in Europe, my washing machine was either in my kitchen, or in my bathroom, so it was kind of hard to miss. Now that I’m back in the States, it’s in the laundry room. So what’s been happening is this; I load the washing machine, turn it on,  walk out of the laundry room, and close the door. Then I forget all about it, because I’m not seeing it spin around every time I walk into the kitchen or bathroom. Plus, a cycle takes like half the time here as it does over there. I usually remember right about the time the clothes take on that musty smell.

// Have you seen those Cindy Crawford infomercials? The one where she’s hawking some fountain of youth face serum? It turns out the secret ingredient to the stuff comes from melons grown in The Luberon. Well guess what… Honey Jr’s maternal grandparents grow melons in The Luberon! If I had known they were growing the fountain of youth right down the road from my house, I would have been running through those fields slathering melon fruit all over my face.

// Remember how before I moved to Texas, I was worried about wine (because in my world, wine is most definitely something to worry about), like how much more expensive it was going to be, and how  would I possibly be able to decipher all of those cutesy, critter labels? Well in my first week here, I came across this label up there. What in the Hello Kitty does that even mean?! It’s so dumb, just so dumb. And then there’s the bottle of French red that simply says, “We hope you enjoy our wine made with grapes from the finest ‘locations’ in France“… the finest “locations”! Locations was actually in quotes like that! WHAT LOCATIONS?! Can you be more specific, just narrow it down a bit. France is kind of a big place, and I think with a price of $18, it should buy me a clue too, or maybe even a map.

// Gregory managed to avoid the whole Daylight Savings Time and losing an hour thing this year (unlike the year we lost an hour twice) because he arrived in Texas the day that France put their clocks forward, and the US had already done it a few weeks before. That’s what I call winning at life.

// I had my first real bout of homesickness for France over the weekend. We were watching Mr. London and RCT play Leinster in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals. The sky was shining that perfect, bright and cheery Provençal blue over the stadium in Toulon, and I could hear the shouts of the crowd. If I closed my eyes, I could see myself there, sandwiched in the middle of Gregory and Mrs. London. Instead, we were sitting on the couch in Texas, and in between cheers for Mr. London (who was named man of the match thank you very much), Gregory and I would look at each other sadly. It kind of felt like being repeatedly punched in the stomach.

// Have you seen Monuments Men? Matt Damon’s character speaks French in it… sort of. If you ever wanted to know how I speak French, it’s more or less like this. It’s effectual, it’s just not pretty.

P.S. I’m happy to report that after hitting publish, I showed the clip to Gregory and he said, “Are you crazy? Your French is way better than that. I can’t even understand him. Why is he speaking with a Spanish accent?” So kudos to me. #pattingmyselfontheback

  1. Hi Sara! I've been following your blog for quite some time, but I'm typically one of those people who never usually comments. 🙂 I used to be an expat in Germany for three years. We moved back to Michigan over two years ago, and I've got to say that repatriation is one of the hardest things I've ever done. This July we'll have been back in the States for three years, and I still long for Germany and my old life over there daily. The first few weeks of being back in the States were exciting and overwhelming, but once that wore off, the homesickness really hit hard. You summed it up perfectly by saying it felt like being repeatedly punched in the stomach. I'm here to say that it does eventually get easier, but the homesickness for your old “home” in France (or in my case, Germany) never truly goes away. It took me almost 2 years to finally feel like Michigan was “home” again… So, from one repatriated expat to another… Hang in there. It does eventually feel less like getting punched in the stomach and it turns more into that feeling of having something pull at your heartstrings whenever you think about your old life in France. Welcome back and best wishes in your repatriation! 🙂 If you're ever in Michigan, let me know… I could show you around the fabulous (said with much sarcasm) city of Detroit. 🙂

  2. Sara, my dear, you are a child of the world. Are you staying in Texas? I loved Texas and still miss it. We lived in Houston for 11 years. Texas really is a state of mind/a great state. Though Austin would be my first choice, I love San Antonio and all the little hill country towns. Fredricksburg is neat. Just enjoy the ride. You can always go back to France. I bet you guys are going to have a ball.

  3. I watched Monuments Men dubbed into French, ugh. Missed all that and Jean du Jardin presumably having a comical French accent. Dubbed movies suck!

  8. Well really, you had, like, a month's head start to learn all those cadillac stats, what were you doing?!Also, did you hear, no more Heineken Cup? It's going to be the European Rugby Champions Cup. Who the hell wants to play for something that sounds so boring, at least with the first one you had the prospect of a drink after a win ;o)

  9. I had a Cadillac in the 1990s and early 2000s. It was a likable car but very gas mileage challenged.

  10. Nothing to do with this post – enjoyable as it is – I had a sleepless night last night and got up at 2 a.m to catch up with some blogs and Pins. I had a good look at your style board and want everything! Maybe need to lose a few more pounds first but skinny jeans and heels here I come! Thank you x

  11. Forgetting the laundry sounds exactly like something I would do! I still can't figure out WHY it takes so long for the washing machine to run a cycle here. Like, what are skipping during this process in America that makes it so quick to wash clothes? I'm sorry you're feeling homesick, but isn't it awesome that you're still able to watch Mr. London play even though you live on a completely different continent? Will they come to visit you once the season's over?

  13. Our laundry room is out back so we have to walk to it! Even easier to forget about the wash! The bottle of wine thing makes me laugh! So true!! Keep meaning to watch Monuments Men, but haven't got round to it – is it good? I have seen that Cindy Crawford ad, kind of want to try it out!

  14. Haha, even though our washing machine is in the kitchen, I still forget about them. 🙂 Matt Damon's accent was a bit bizarre. It reminds me of some films where the supposedly french role would be spoken by someone who seemed to have taken the words from Google Translate. My husband cringes each time. Nice to read about your new adventures in Texas. Have a great week!

  17. Just sitting here in my hotel room in Reims thinking of you and I popped on for an update. I should have warned you about the French wine situation in Texas, it's rather dreadful I'm afraid. You will have far better luck with Italian there but (I'm not sure where you're living in Texas) Total wine has a few things that might, might remind you of your other home. I so wish I could ship to you! Dammit Texas. Hugs from, once again, across the pond.

  22. Hahaha, your reaction to the wine labels sounds just like BV's reaction to the beer labels when we were there. “Fat Tire? What does that mean?! Does it taste like a car?” The variety of stuff in the States is great but they're a little too concerned with grabby names instead of giving the consumer information that is actually helpful. And Caddys are sweet… just think about rocking the big sunglasses/scarf look while you two cruise Texas with the top down. 🙂
